Lactic Acid
INCI name: Lactic Acid
Origin
Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that occurs naturally in fermented foods such as yoghurt, buttermilk, and sauerkraut. It is also a natural component of the skin's Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF). For cosmetics, lactic acid is now predominantly produced by the fermentation of plant-based sugars (e.g. from corn or sugarcane).
Production
Biotechnological production is carried out by fermenting plant raw materials with lactic acid bacteria. The result is a highly pure, vegan lactic acid that is used in various concentrations in skincare.
Effect on the skin
- Gentle exfoliation: Lactic acid removes dead skin cells and visibly refines the skin's appearance.
- Moisturising: As a humectant, it draws moisture into the skin and improves moisture retention.
- Brightening: It reduces pigmentation spots and ensures a more even, radiant complexion.
- Gentler than other AHAs: Lactic acid is milder than glycolic acid and therefore also suitable for sensitive skin.
Suitable for which skin type
Suitable for all skin types, especially recommended for dull skin, pigmentation spots and dry skin.
