Origin
Glycosphingolipids are naturally occurring lipids found in the cell membranes of all living organisms, including human skin. They belong to the sphingolipid family and are closely related to ceramides: in the stratum corneum, the skin converts glucosylceramides into ceramides, which form the lipid barrier. For cosmetics they are mainly obtained from plant sources such as grains or soy.
Production
Glycosphingolipids for skincare are obtained by gentle extraction from plant raw materials. The process is vegan and yields a skin-related care ingredient.
Effect on the skin
- Support the skin barrier: As ceramide precursors, they complement the skin's natural lipid matrix.
- Help retain moisture: Together with other lipids, they help reduce the skin's moisture loss.
- Well tolerated: As skin-related lipids, they are considered very well tolerated, even by sensitive skin.
The effect is best studied when taken as a dietary supplement. In creams, glycosphingolipids work mainly in combination with ceramides and nourishing oils.
Suitable skin types
Especially recommended for dry, sensitive and mature skin, and for skin prone to feeling tight.
