Hyaluronic Acid

INCI name: Sodium Hyaluronate / Hyaluronic Acid

Origin

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the human body. It is found primarily in the skin, joints, and connective tissue. In the body, it binds enormous amounts of water, providing volume, elasticity, and hydration. With increasing age, the natural hyaluronic acid content of the skin decreases, leading to dryness and loss of skin fullness.

Production

For cosmetics, hyaluronic acid is now produced through biotechnological fermentation. At COSMENIA, we deliberately use plant-derived hyaluronic acid – obtained from natural sources such as sugar beets or corn. This process is completely cruelty-free, vegan, and sustainable. It provides highly pure, stable hyaluronic acid in various molecular sizes for optimal skin penetration.

Effect on the skin

Hyaluronic acid is one of the most effective moisturizing active ingredients in modern skincare:

  • Intense Hydration: A single molecule of hyaluronic acid can bind up to 1,000 times its own weight in water.
  • Plumping skin sensation: The skin appears plumper, smoother, and more youthful.
  • Multi-layered effect: Low molecular weight hyaluronic acid penetrates deeper into the skin, while high molecular weight hyaluronic acid works on the surface and forms a protective film.
  • Soothing and well-tolerated: Hyaluronic acid is suitable for all skin types and causes no irritation.

Suitable for which skin type

Hyaluronic acid is universally applicable – equally suitable for dry, oily, sensitive, and mature skin. It is one of the few active ingredients that has no contraindications.
