Zinc Oxide

INCI Name: Zinc Oxide

Origin

Zinc oxide is a naturally occurring mineral extracted from zinc ore. It is one of the oldest and safest ingredients in cosmetics and has been used for centuries in medicine and skincare. As a mineral UV filter, it is one of the few substances that broadly shields both UVA and UVB radiation.

Production

Zinc oxide is produced by thermal oxidation of zinc. For cosmetic use, it is employed in various particle sizes – from micronized to nano. At COSMENIA, only non-nano zinc oxide is used, which remains on the skin and does not penetrate the body.

Effect on the Skin

  • Mineral UV Protection: Zinc oxide reflects and scatters UV radiation, offering reliable broad-spectrum protection against UVA and UVB.
  • Soothing and Anti-inflammatory: It alleviates irritation, redness, and inflammation.
  • Antibacterial: Zinc oxide inhibits the growth of bacteria on the skin.
  • Skin-friendly: As a mineral filter, it is particularly suitable for sensitive skin and becomes effective immediately after application.

Suitable for Which Skin Type

Particularly suitable for sensitive, irritated, and acne-prone skin, as well as for children and individuals with intolerances to chemical UV filters.
